Most games will drop a number of cards equal to about half the number of cards in that game's set of cards.

For example, Half-Life 2 has 8 cards in its set, you can receive 4 card drops by playing it. You'll need to collect the other half of the set from other community members. Try the beta group discussions, community market, barter with friends, and trade discussions. You can check how many drops you have remaining on your badges page.

Free to play games drop game cards based on your in-game purchasing. This card will drop at some point as you play. If you have made in-game purchases in Dota 2 or Team Fortress 2 prior to the Steam Trading Card Beta, or if you owned Team Fortress 2 prior to the Free to Play update, you will have 4 or 5 additional card drops available. Once you have received all of your card drops, you become eligible for a booster pack, which is a set of 3 trading cards that may include both basic and foil cards.

Booster packs are granted randomly to eligible users as more badges are crafted by members of the community. Make sure you log in to Steam each week to maintain eligibility. From your Badges page, the "Badges in Progress" tab shows you which Steam Trading Cards you already have, how many more you can get by playing the game, and how many more you need to complete a set.

Clicking on a badge in progress will show you a list of all your friends who have the cards you need to complete the set, and has a link to sending them a message to start a trade. Tappet can see that Cyl has the Portal 2 cards he needs to complete his Portal 2 badge. Tappet is now able to complete his Portal 2 badge. There's a complete list of participating games available on the Steam Store. We'll be adding more games as we get them done. A badge is an icon on your profile and tied to your account that represents the trading card sets you've collected or your participation in an event.

From your Profile page, click on the "Badges" link near the top of the right column or select "Badges" from your persona name drop down in the Steam menu. You can navigate through your inventory by using the arrow buttons and you can search for a specific item by using the search bar and filters underneath it.

To add an item to the trade drag and drop the item thumbnail into the top half of the offers box. The chat window at the bottom left of the trade screen also serves as a log file which documents what is added and removed from the trade window.

Once the other person has added their item to the trade window click on the blue ready bar underneath your offer. The bar will then turn green indicating to the other person that you've finalized your offer. If you'd like to make an adjustment to the trade you can click on it again to remove the ready status. The ready bar will automatically revert back to blue if the other party makes a change to their offer. Once both people have marked themselves as ready the Make Trade button will light up, to commit to the trade click on it.

Once both people have clicked the Make Trade button the items will exchange hands. You'll now be able to view your newly acquired item within your Steam Inventory.

Nuka Cola 8 Oct, pm. Very helpful! The req to trade was in a different chat then mine He got to the venue hours before it opened on the first day and prepared to make his move. As soon as the doors opened, he made a beeline for Valve's merchandise counter. Lee proceeded to spend almost all of his savings on every form of Dota 2 merch he could get his hands on.

From gaming headsets to plushies to t-shirts, he bought up huge quantities of anything that came with codes for in-game items. Once they took out my stuff, they were like 'Uhhh The staff members offered Lee the push cart they used to stock the merchandise booth. He accepted. Then, they asked 'OK, did you book a cab? Eventually Lee found a cab and made it back to the hostel where he was staying.

As soon as he managed to unpack his mountain of loot, he began the process of making his money back. He posted his wares everywhere he could find: Steam community forums, third-party sites like Dota 2 Lounge and even reddit. He was the first attendee to get any of the special International 3 loot up for sale, and he had no problem finding buyers for his gear. He spent 20 straight hours selling before finally passing out at four in the morning the next day.

When he woke up, he started again. When asked whether he planned to attend The International again this year, Lee says, "Yeah for sure.

With more money this time of course. In December of , Valve launched the Steam Community Market, which allows players to buy and sell their items within the relative security of an official, Valve-regulated economy. In many ways, it's safer than traditional cash trading, thanks to protection offered by Valve. But Valve also keeps the proceeds of Steam marketplace sales in players' Steam Wallets, preventing that money from ever leaving Valve's closed system.

Steam Wallet money can only be used to buy things on Steam, which means you either reinvest it in new items or use it to buy Steam games. Because of that limitation, people who want real-world cash for their items still have to resort to third-party trading sites, so those sites — and all the problems associated with them — still exist. Despite this shortcoming, business is booming on the official marketplace.

Items have been implemented in games beyond TF2 , like Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive , and their respective economies are also thriving. Meanwhile, more and more players are also flocking to the unofficial marketplaces, and the list of outliers continues to grow. Valve has remained enigmatic about how it deals with scams and other unusual events in its marketplace.

A representative declined to comment for this story. Some traders and developers we talked to have had their own run-ins with the powers that be, however, giving a partial sense of Valve's outlook on item trading. Shortly after Ranieri lost his items, he contacted Valve to see if it could help him out. If we are gonna apply any suspension to the user who scammed you, we're not gonna tell you. The frustration in Ranieri's voice is apparent as he continues: "I provided them with [approximately] 20 screen shots; even my grandmother could understand what I told them Valve has, on occasion in the past, been direct in its dealings with the trading community.

In , when a bug appeared that allowed TF2 items to be farmed while idling in a server, Valve patched the exploit out and awarded everyone who had not taken advantage of the bug an exclusive hat. It's called the Cheater's Lament and, when worn, looks like an angel's halo above the player's head. Many traders still own this item and feature it on their Steam profiles like a badge of honor. For the future, Valve is keeping quiet about most of its plans for the marketplace, including how it plans to tackle fraud.

As it currently stands, the selection of Steam-tradable items for non-Valve games is slim. There's the odd cosmetic item for games such as Path of Exile and Warframe , but none of them have the dispensation and storage of in-game inventories tied directly to Steam the way that Valve's own games do.
